01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Situated on the edge of Shinobazu Pond in Ueno Zoo's West Garden, Cafe Chameleon is a convenient self-service stop for visitors touring the grounds. Its open-air wooden terrace offers benches and tables looking directly out onto the water, where you can pause for lunch or tea while observing waterfowl and seasonal lotus leaves across the pond.

Among the counter offerings, the panda-themed bites naturally capture attention. The bamboo-wrapped panda bento shapes seasoned steamed glutinous rice into a panda face—a playful design enjoyed by children and adults alike. Steamed until tender and fluffy, the panda meat buns conceal a savoury pork filling interspersed with crunchy bamboo shoots, ideal for a quick bite between exhibits.

For a more substantial meal, diners can pick a cheeseburger built with a thick patty and rich cheddar on a pretzel bun served with fries, or opt for a guacamole burger featuring plant-based meat and avocado sauce. Shareable favourites include generous bowls of fried chicken and chips alongside classic stir-fried yakisoba noodles, catering easily to families and groups.

Drink options span cream sodas and iced coffee floats crowned with melting vanilla ice cream, as well as Kirin Ichiban Shibori draft beer. Sweet treats such as panda dango skewers—packaged with a collectible panda card—and panda milk ice cream tubs provide easy takeaway desserts to round out a relaxed break by the pond.
